CBT & OSCE – Essential Steps in the UK Nursing Registration Process

At 360 Recruitment Group, we are committed to guiding nurses through every stage of their journey toward working in the UK. Two of the most crucial steps in this process are the CBT (Computer-Based Test) and OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) — both required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for international nurses seeking registration in the UK.

What is the CBT?

The Computer-Based Test (CBT) is the first step in the NMC registration process for overseas nurses. It assesses theoretical knowledge based on UK nursing practice.

Structure of the CBT:

Total Questions: 115 multiple-choice questions

Duration: 3 hours

Sections:

Numeracy (Drug Calculations) – part of the clinical assessment

Clinical Knowledge – covering adult nursing or the specific field of application (mental health, pediatric, etc.)

Professional Values & Ethical Practice

Patient-Centered Care & Communication

Risk Management & Infection Control

Purpose:

Candidates are guaranteed to possess the necessary theoretical knowledge to practice safely and successfully in the UK thanks to the CBT.

What is the OSCE?

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is the practical component of the NMC registration process. It evaluates the clinical skills and professional behavior of nurses in a simulated healthcare setting.

Structure of the OSCE:

Total Stations: 10

API Stations (Assessment, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation): 4 stations

Skills Stations: 4 clinical skill demonstrations (e.g., catheter care, wound dressing)

Professional Behaviours & Evidence-Based Practice: 2 stations

Duration: Approximately 2.5 – 3 hours

Purpose:

The OSCE ensures that international nurses meet UK clinical and communication standards in real-life scenarios.
